The Eldorado High School girls soccer team (18-2-2) won the 2022 State Championship on Saturday against the Cleveland Storm.
Although the score was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, Eldorado won in a shootout, 5-3.
Coach Aaron Forrester said the team was strong this year with a senior-led team of nine seniors and several outstanding sophomores. The team had a retreat before the season establishing goals, which included winning district and state.
“This team battled hard and fought through all their games this year to accomplish those goals. It was an outstanding run on the road to win at Las Cruces in the semifinal against a team that had not lost all year, and the final in Rio Rancho at Cleveland against Cleveland. It truly was a special season,” Forrester said.
The team will be having their banquet this week to celebrate their victory with families and friends.
The team had a stellar year with only two loses the whole season.
During the game, goalkeeper Caitlin Sanchez had four penalty kick saves and eight saves total.
Team captain Eva Forrester was chosen as Player of the Game. Haley Robinson scored the team’s lone regulation goal in the first half, while Serina Davis had one assist and one shot on the goal.
The team now has a national ranking of 60 and is number one in New Mexico.
