Albuquerque Public Schools is currently surveying staff and community members about the option to implement an extended school year and day.
The online surveys, which will be conducted through May 1, will be used to assess opinions, concerns and expectations for an extended school year to help the district understand the public’s desires moving forward.
The proposal to extend the school year by 10 days — and the school day by an hour for elementary schools — came from state lawmakers and the New Mexico Public Education Department to address learning loss throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also a response to a lawsuit that found the state has failed to provide adequate programs and services for marginalized students.
Earlier this month, the APS Board of Education voted in favor of allowing individual schools, in collaboration with students, staff and families, to decide whether to implement the Extended Learning Time Program. Schools that consider it will receive materials to share with their communities as they go through the decision process.
In the meantime, leaders of schools interested in the ELTP have the option, through April 22, to visit schools that currently have extended calendars. School decisions will be announced early next month.
