The City Council Redistricting Committee has one meeting before the determination of which new map will be used, and the result could change District 8 drastically.
Currently, the District 8 map has a population of 57,600, but three proposed districting maps — A, D and E — would boost the district population by 2,000-4,000 people. Citizen maps one through five are also still being considered.
Some proposals went over and under the 5% population deviation for some districts, including map D, which was corrected by moving one precinct from to District 8 to 4.
Every 10 years, the city must appoint a committee to review and recommend redistricting based on population density and balance of voting rights.
A committee member posted to a local forum letting anyone know if people object to any changes to use the public comments form at the bottom of the page here.
Their next and last meeting is over Zoom on June 29, and the committee will then present its recommendation to the council for a vote, currently scheduled for Aug. 1.
