A wildly successful 2021-22 athletic season at Volcano Vista High School added another moment of happiness Thursday.

Parents beamed with pride as Volcano Vista senior and public address announcer Carlos Tenorio introduced each athlete and Athletic Director Ron McMath congratulated the students on signing with their respective colleges.

“That’s a great group of kids,” McMath said. “That makes a total of 21 that have signed so far. It’s a great class. You know, obviously our academic and our athletics had been great this year, and a large part is due to our seniors.”

Volcano Vista has won four state championships so far this school year, including both the girls and boys basketball teams’ historic undefeated seasons. Those teams were honored at the state capital earlier this month.

In the fall, Natalia Chavez and Jaelyn Bates signed to play women’s basketball at the University of New Mexico, Kennedy Brown signed to play soccer at UNM, Lauren Machuca signed to play soccer at New Mexico State and Sophia Portillos signed to play tennis at Dominican University.
