Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed a familiar sight in the recent trailer for season four of “Stranger Things.”
In the trailer, main characters Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) walk by a school named Lenora Hills High School when in actuality it is Albuquerque’s Eldorado High School. A side-by-side comparison of the high school featured in the trailer matches with Google Street View images of EHS. However, additional locations used in the series won’t be revealed until they are released on screen.
According to an August 2021 press release from the New Mexico Film Office, the popular Netflix series spent the month filming in Albuquerque.
In addition to employing hundreds of New Mexicans (325 crew members, 70 principal cast members and 700 background actors and extras), the film office also stated its excitement of additional possibilities for the area. “Not only are we excited to see New Mexico locations and talent on full display in this series, we are interested in the film tourism that could potentially follow as well,” Alicia J. Keyes, New Mexico Economic Development Department cabinet secretary, said in the release.
The new season, with volume one set to drop at 1 a.m. May 27 on Netflix, takes place six months after the Battle of Starcourt, the climax of season three, according to the Netflix Media Center. “Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier,” the Netflix release states. “In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”
“Stranger Things” is produced by The Duffer Brothers and by Monkey Massacre Productions and 21 Laps Entertainment. The Duffer Brothers serve as executive producers on the series, alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps Entertainment, Iain Paterson and Curtis Gwinn.
Volume two of season four of “Stranger Things” premieres July 1.
