The Chargers are off to good start in football and soccer. The varsity football team took the win against the Pintos, and the girls varsity soccer team defeated Highland over the weekend. Here are some of the scores and a look at upcoming games for a few of Academy’s fall sports teams:

Football
Albuquerque Academy defeated Moriarty 20-7 in its second varsity football game of the season. MaxPreps gives senior Cole Conway credit for two of the Chargers’ touchdowns and senior Kellan Gehres for the other in Saturday’s game. Conway had 119 rushing yards and Gehres 99 receiving yards. Quarterback Andres Rivera is credited with 156 passing yards by MaxPreps.

Senior Kiedis Connel had 12 tackles for the night, senior Landen Martinez 11 tackles and junior Dalton Lee 10. Junior Brody Whitaker, senior Spencer Lyon and Lee all had a sack apiece. The Chargers face Hope Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. Academy’s JV football team takes on Los Alamos at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12.

Boys soccer
Academy’s varsity soccer team lost Saturday’s home game against Highland High 2-1 at the APS Soccer Complex. Midfielder and forward Grady Gilchrist scored the lone goal for the Chargers with an assist by Jude Logan. Gilchrist had two shots against the Hornets.

Academy took bronze in Group D of the Albuquerque Metro Championships with one win, one tie and one loss. Their next game will be Tuesday, Aug. 30, with the time and opponent still to be announced.

Girls soccer
The Lady Chargers blazed past the Hornets in an 11-0 shutout on Saturday’s varsity matchup at the APS Soccer Complex. Senior Anna Babinski scored a hat trick, sophomore Reily Cates scored two goals and eighth-grader S. Broussard scored two. Senior Lily Spoerke, juniors Piper Wiese and C. Martinez, and eighth-grader Cambria Tero all scored a goal each.

Academy girls took silver in Group B of the Metro Championships with two wins and one draw. The Chargers play Volcano Vista at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in an away game.

Volleyball
Academy’s varsity volleyball team takes on Cleveland High in its first game of the season at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Chargers’ JV and freshman teams also play Cleveland on Tuesday, with the freshman game at 4 p.m. and the JV game at 5 p.m.

Cross country
The boys varsity cross country team took seventh and the girls varsity third in the Cleveland Invite on Saturday, Aug. 27. Next up is the St. Pius X Super Cinco at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.
