Cross-country
Host team Albuquerque Academy took first place in the boys varsity 4A 5,000 Meter Run Finals during Saturday’s 2022 Academy Extravaganza. The Chargers scored 40 points with an average team time of 17:23, outpacing second-place Lovington by 38 points and Kirtland Central by 91 points. Nate Klein placed third, Alex Goss ninth, Hayden Prescott 10th, Nicholas Ponte 11th and Akilan Sankaran 12th for the Chargers. Klein finished with a time of 16:53.85, just shy of Michael Riess’ first-place finish at 16:38.41 for Portales.
Katie Patton took first place in the 5,000 meter run for the girls, with a time of 19:11.32. Anna Hastings and Addison Julian crossed the finish line just seconds after Patton, with times of 19:36.79 and 19:46.16, respectively. Isabella Barnes placed eighth with a time of 21:03.80 and Grace Morneau 10th with a time of 21:26.68. The Lady Chargers placed first in the 4A varsity 5,000 meter race with a score of 24 and an average team time of 20:12. Shiprock came in second and Kirtland Central third.
According to MileSplitNM, Albuquerque Academy is registered to race in the Oct. 21 Los Alamos Invite. The website says 15 teams from across the state are scheduled or registered to race in that meet.
Soccer
Rio Rancho ended the Chargers’ nine-game win streak on Saturday, beating them 2-1 in a nondistrict away game. MaxPreps credits sophomore M. Giermakowski for Academy’s one goal and senior Ethan Saiz with the assist. The boys varsity team is 12-4-3 overall this season and 7-0 in 4A District 6. They take on Bernalillo in a district away game at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18. Bernalillo is 4-12-1 overall and 0-6 in 4A District 6.
The Lady Chargers also lost to Rio Ranch on Saturday, ending the game with three goals to the Rams’ four. Senior Anna Babinski, junior Piper Wiese and senior Jaclyn Lehrman all put one in the back of the net for Academy. Babinski and Lehrman are credited with assists by MaxPreps. The Lady Chargers are 11-5-3 overall and have a record of 5-2 in 4A District 6. They face Bernalillo at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in a district home game.
Football
Portales stomped the Chargers 42-7 in Academy’s first 4A District 4/6 game of the season. The Chargers completed 117 yards compared to Portales’ 236. Senior Spencer Lyon came up with four sacks for Academy, but it wasn’t enough to stop Portales from its barrage of touchdowns. The Chargers are 5-3 overall and 0-1 in their district this season. They take on Lovington in a district away game at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.
Volleyball
The girls varsity team swept Bernalillo 25-13, 25-13, 25-12 in a district away game on Thursday, Oct. 13. The Chargers are 9-10 overall and 3-1 in 4A District 6, according to MaxPreps. They face Valley in a district away game at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20. Albuquerque Academy is ranked No. 25 in the state and No. 7 in Division 4A by MaxPreps. Goddard is ranked No. 1 in the state for Class 4A.
