Albuquerque Police Department homicide detectives have charged Giovanni Salazar with the murder of his father, Eddie Salazar, during a confrontation Tuesday in northwest Albuquerque.

Police responded to a 911 call shortly after 6 a.m. from Giovanni Salazar, who reportedly had accidentally shot his father at his father’s home in the 4000 block of Hillspire Ave. NW. Giovanni Salazar told police he was fighting with his father and he accidentally shot him in the hip. Officers arrived at the home and found Eddie Salazar, 74, dead. Giovanni Salazar was detained for questioning.

Detectives investigated further and determined Giovanni Salazar chose to remove his gun from his holster and point it at his father instead of defusing the situation. Giovanni Salazar’s two young sons were in the home at the time of the shooting.

Giovanni Salazar admitted to using meth and said he did not sleep for more than a day.

Giovanni Salazar was booked into the Metro Detention Center on an open count of murder and child abuse.
