North Star Elementary School counselor Kathleen Hager will be recognized for being named the 2022-23 New Mexico Counselor of the Year during the Wednesday, Nov. 16, School Board of Education meeting.
The meeting is open to the public and starts at 5 p.m. at the John Milne Community Board Room. The meeting can also be attended virtually through the Albuquerque Public Schools website.
In a YouTube video posted Oct. 30, 2022, Hager says she is honored to be named counselor of the year. In addition, she says, “I am a school counselor because I firmly believe that my students and their families, no matter where they’re from or what languages they speak, need to be seen, need to be heard, need to feel safe and need to gain from our educational system the tools they need to be successful in life.”
Hager previously won the 2022 William S. Dixon First Amendment Freedom Award for helping to make Albuquerque Public Schools promotion process more transparent.
Rights and responsibilities policy and other actions
Also on Wednesday’s agenda is discussion of the new KB1 Student and Parent/Guardian Rights and Responsibilities policy. The board will vote to approve the new policy, which strikes the term “family members” and replaces it with “individuals” in several instances. Under the Academic Success: Responsibilities section the term “To promote” is removed in five instances, to provide more straightforward language.
The board will also vote to approve the 2023 legislative agenda, a grant adjustment budget, expenditures for several items and cash disbursements to APS vendors.
Redistricting
Redistricting maps will be discussed in depth at Wednesday’s meeting before a final determination is made at the Dec. 7 APS School Board of Education meeting. After five different meetings, the APS Redistricting Committee recommended concept maps E2 and E3 to the school board.
Redistricting is required every 10 years based on U.S. Census data and does not affect school zone boundaries in any way. School board Districts 2, 3, 4 and 1 will see the most significant changes in the new maps, with District 2 losing all of Corrales to District 3 in both concept maps E2 and E3.
