The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday the a police service dog was injured by an armed suspect during a SWAT situation Thursday night.

The dog, K9 Nordy, was stabbed once as police attempted to apprehend a 40-year-old female who had barricaded herself inside of a residence.

Nordy was transported to a local veterinarian and is stable condition.

According to a release from BCSO, around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies were dispatched to 1737 Potomac Road SW, where a female barricaded herself inside a residence. The female, identified as Jebrene Garcia, arrived at the home belonging to her sister’s ex-boyfriend and forcibly made entry by removing an air conditioning unit from a front window. Once inside, Garcia armed herself with a large kitchen knife and hid. Garcia was in a physical altercation with the home’s occupants before they could escape. Garcia remained agitated and noncompliant with efforts to take her into custody. SWAT and the Crisis Negotiation Team were activated.

Garcia continued to resist law enforcement and remained barricaded throughout the night. As the SWAT situation progressed, K9 Nordy was utilized. Garcia surrendered after hours of negotiation attempts and was taken into custody Friday just after 8 a.m.
Garcia was booked into MDC at 3:18 p.m. on the following charges:
• Aggravated residential burglary
• Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
• Battery
• Resisting
• Evading or obstructing an officer
• Injury to a police dog
• Aggravated assault on a peace officer
Friday afternoon, the BCSO tweeted “Jebrene Garcia is a repeat offender with a violent history of charges, including child abuse (death or great bodily harm), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, aggravated battery, resisting, evading, aggravated assault on a household member and conspiracy.
She was on probation after a recent felony level conviction of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. All additional aggravated assault charges, false imprisonment and aggravated battery charges were dismissed, and she was released from jail on August 29, 2022.”
