The Solid Waste Management Department will begin its fall green waste collection on Nov. 28. The pickup is offered at no additional charge to residential customers and will run through Friday, Dec. 9. Solid Waste customers should have their green waste at the curb by 7 a.m. on their regular trash collection day. All green waste must be placed 5 feet from trash and recycling containers as well as any large item scheduled for pickup. Albuquerque Fire Rescue reported that units were sent to The Grove at Tramway Apartments Wednesday to respond to reports of smoke coming from a second-story apartment. Twelve units and 33 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The fire started in and was contained to a chimney in the apartment and was extinguished in less than 20 minutes. Four apartment units were displaced because of smoke and water damage, but no injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Last season was an emotional one for the Volcano Vista High School girls basketball team. There were tears of joy after the team capped an undefeated season with a win in the state championship game in March. There were also tears of mourning for the late Mike Brown, a legendary basketball coach known as “Papa” who was a key contributor to and supporter of the program.
