The Beautiful Game was especially cruel to the Volcano Vista High School girls soccer team Friday afternoon. Cibola’s Mireya Torres snuck a shot past Volcano keeper Elena Moya five minutes into overtime to give the Cougars an exciting 3-2 win over the Hawks in the quarterfinals of the state soccer tournament. As Cibola players stormed the pitch to celebrate with Torres, dejected VVHS players fell to the grass in despair. Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to a house fire in the neighborhood near Chamiza Elementary School early Friday morning. Engine 18 and Rescue 18 were first on scene shortly after midnight Friday. Engine 18 extinguished the fire within five minutes of arrival. The house at 5825 Open Sky Drive NW had moderate water and smoke damage, and the residents were displaced. AFR reported there were no injuries to pets, civilians or firefighters and ruled the fire was accidental.
The Volcano Vista High School soccer teams begin the state tournament Friday with a doubleheader at home. The PTA at Chamiza Elementary has partnered with Cornivore to raise money for the school. The fundraiser begins Friday with orders being taken through Nov. 10.
