Gas prices saw a big drop this week in Albuquerque as the average price for a gallon of gasoline dipped from $3.62 last week to $3.41 on Wednesday. That trend also carried over to northwest Albuquerque as several stations in the neighborhood were below the citywide average. Costco and Sam’s Club, which each require a membership, were at $3.14. The Volcano Vista High School Marching Band finished the season on a high note by finishing first place in Class3A at the Pageant of the Bands Saturday. The band also won awards for Peoples Choice, Best Brass, Woodwinds, Soloists and Percussion. The win last weekend capped a successful year for the Hawks. In September, the band travelled and competed in the Bands Of America Regional Competition, receiving a second-place 3A finish along with a sixth-place overall finish among bands from New Mexico, Texas and Arizona. Parents are invited to James Monroe Middle School Thursday night for an informational meeting regarding some issues that may be facing their students. The event runs from 6-7 p.m. in the cafeteria and is presented by the Albuquerque Police Department, Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office and Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.). The meeting will cover underage vaping, alcohol use, substance abuse and the dangers of social media.
Albuquerque Police Department’s homicide unit is investigating a fatal shooting in northwest Albuquerque. APD officers responded to a call about an adult male who had been shot on the 9000 block of Southern Sky St. NW, near Rainbow and Paseo del Norte, around 5:15 p.m. Monday. When they arrived on scene, they found the man dead.
Soccer Keegan Monheimer and Giancarlo Gutierrez each scored a goal for the boys team in a 2-0 victory over Cibola Saturday. The boys finished the regular season with a 14-1-3 record and as District 1 champs. They earned the No. 1 seed in the state tournament, which begins Tuesday. Registration is now open for free basketball and volleyball winter leagues at the YMCA. The leagues are open to kids ages 8-17. The youth volleyball league, which is co-ed, will teach players the fundamentals of volleyball, sportsmanship, teamwork and healthy habits while sharpening skills like spiking, setting, blocking and serving through practicing drills and having fun. Sports bettors west of the river have been out of luck lately as the sportsbook at Santa Ana Star Casino and Hotel has been closed since the end of September. New Mexico’s first sportsbook is unable to operate because its odds provider, Nevada-based USBookmaking, let its license expire. The paperwork has been filed and the license should be approved, but the timetable for when Santa Ana’s sportsbook can re-open is uncertain. Albuquerque Police Department’s Organized Crime Unit arrested Lovelea Degeer on several charges relating to the stealing of more than $8,000 worth of plants from Albertson’s grocery stores dozens of times beginning in April 2021. Degeer, who targeted Albertson’s stores on Wyoming, Academy, Lomas, Eubank and Ventura, is accused of using her children to help steal the plants. Degeer, 36, would then sell the plants on Facebook at below-value prices. Degeer’s boyfriend, Jayson Morales, 41, was also arrested. He was identified in assisting in the thefts in 2022. Morales was currently on probation, which was ultimately revoked due to his involvement with…
