Police officers in Albuquerque will put the “serve” in “protect and serve” Thursday at Chili’s locations throughout the city. Chili’s is hosting a Tip-a-Cop fundraiser from 5-9 p.m. Thursday with officers standing in as servers and collecting donations for Special Olympics New Mexico. The Tip-a-Cop fundraiser is part of a national effort to raise money for the Special Olympics and is a platform for the Law Enforcement Torch Run. A water main break caused a headache for some motorists in northwest Albuquerque early Thursday morning. Northbound Coors was closed  just north of Ellison Road because of several sinkholes caused by flooding from a water main break around 5 a.m. Albuquerque Police Department was on the scene assisting the Water Authority with the emergency. Repairs are underway but are expected to take a couple of days. NMDOT says traffic is being diverted down Ellison to Alameda and back to NM-528. Drivers are asked to avoid the area

It was good news at the pumps this week as the average price for a gallon of gasoline dropped from $3.77 last week to $3.62 in Albuquerque on Wednesday. That dip didn’t carry over to northwest Albuquerque, however, as only a few stations in the neighborhood had prices below the citywide average. Sam’s Club was at $3.28 and Costco was at $3.29, but both require a membership. Murphy Express had two locations below average with the station on Alameda at $3.57 and the one on 528 at $3.56. Albuquerque Police Department is looking for the two men pictured above in connection with an incident at Spirit Halloween on the west side Monday afternoon. APD was called to the store after two men took merchandise and threatened employees with a gun when confronted. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 505-843-STOP (7867). The La Cueva High School volleyball team beat rival Eldorado in four sets Tuesday night to improve its record this season to 18-0. But Tuesday night at La Cueva was about much more than volleyball. This night was for Fred Ader, a beloved figure in the volleyball community who was recently diagnosed with  amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Next week is Super Smash Bros. week at Volcano Vista High School. Registration is open for all students to participate in a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament, which begins on Monday and runs through Thursday. Students can register to play the popular crossover fighting game all week during lunch at the sign-up table in E-Hall. The tournament will be held in the Lecture Hall and G108. It costs $5 to play in the tournament with all proceeds going to support the Robotics program. The winner gets a trophy, candy and bragging rights.

The Volcano Vista High School marching band will be looking to defend its title this weekend at the 42nd annual New Mexico Pageant of Bands. This year’s event, which will feature more than 2,000 students will be held Saturday at Rio Rancho Ram Stadium. Gates open at 7:45 a.m. Bands from across New Mexico, including 10 from Albuquerque, will compete against those of comparable size, beginning with the smallest in the morning. The Albuquerque Police Department is asking the public for help in finding a woman who allegedely helped steal from the Kohl’s near Coors and Ellison. The woman helped steal more than $2,000 worth of goods from the store Saturday. APD was called to Kohl’s for a report of two shoplifters. A man, later identified as Dakota Blythe, and the woman stole items from the store and tried to walk out the back door. Blythe was caught with nearly $2,200 worth of goods but the woman escaped. Band Volcano Vista took fourth in the prestigious Zia Marching Band Fiesta Saturday at University Stadium. The Hawks scored 82.9 points, less than nine less than Clovis which won the event for the ninth straight year. Volleyball Volcano Vista continued to struggle, falling in four sets against Rio Rancho Thursday. The Hawks (10-8, 0-3 1-5A) lost their third straight match.
