The Albuquerque Public Schools Clothing Bank is running its fourth annual Socktober Drive throughout the month. With the cold, wet weather, socks can make a difference in keeping students’ feet warm and dry. You can support the growing number of students who need assistance by: Donating money through the APS Education Foundation using the designation “Socktober.” Purchasing socks to send directly to the clothing bank from their Amazon Wish List. All high school seniors are invited to attend the Early Childhood Education Career Fair hosted by the city of Albuquerque next week. The event is 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the New Mexico Workforce Connection Center. More than 20 early childhood education employers will be present at this event, hiring for more than 180 positions in English and Spanish. On Wednesday, they wore pink. Tony Hillerman Middle School’s volleyball team hosted its “Go Pink or Go Home” game to raise money for the American Cancer Society Wednesday. The team has been holding fundraisers to fight cancer every year since 2015. Players, coaches, faculty, fans and parents were all decked out in pink to support the fundraiser, which helps to save lives and fund the future of cancer research, patient support and advocacy. All sophomores and any juniors who registered at Volcano Vista High School will take the PSAT/NMSQT on Oct. 12. The test will be given at 7:25 a.m. with testing students getting an early release after lunch. The average price for a gallon of gasoline in Albuquerque rose slightly this week, going from $3.57 last week to $3.59 on Wednesday. It was much better news in the neighborhood as the prices at most stations in northwest Albuquerque were below the citywide average. The Smith’s on Golf Course was right at the average at $3.59, and three Chevron locations were above average. High school students in Albuquerque Public Schools are invited to apply for a fully funded scholarship to spend an academic year in Germany. The scholarship is offered through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. It is offered annually to 250 American students who will live with a host family and study abroad at a high school in Germany. The program is for high school students who want to experience a different culture and learn a new language. The scholarship includes: International airfare to and from Germany (departing from Washington, D.C.) Orientation in Washington, D.C. A four-week language and cultural immersion camp.…
National Coffee with a Cop Day will be celebrated across the country Wednesday, including in northwest Albuquerque. Albuquerque Police Department officers from the Northwest Area Command will be at Donut Mart at 3301 Coors NW Wednesday from 9-11 a.m. to take part in casual conversations with the community. The Coffee with a Cop program began in 2011 as a way to build trust and help foster a sense of community in the neighborhoods the police serve. People in the neighborhood will have an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and chat with officers.
Football Elliot Paskett-Bell passed for 316 yards and two touchdowns, but the Hawks were steamrolled by Cleveland 56-21 Friday in Rio Rancho. Paskett-Bell hit Tristan Cordova for a 30-yard touchdown to make the score 14-14 in the second quarter. The Storm answered with three straight touchdowns to build an insurmountable lead. Repairs on a leaking underground pipeline will close Ventana Ranch Road Oct. 3-12. Construction on the pipeline began in June and has caused several road closures in the neighborhood. Ventana Ranch Road will be closed from Glacier Road to Los Prados Road. The pedestrian trail along the Piedras Marcadas Arroyo will remain closed from Rainbow Blvd. to Universe Blvd. for this work. Rainbow is scheduled to be paved this week and re-striped the week of Oct. 10-14.
