Baseball and softball players can now register for the spring season at Alameda Little League. From now until Feb. 4, baseball players can register for $150 with $100 for each sibling. Softball players can register for $100. After Feb. 4, the fee is $190 for baseball and $140 for softball. Registration can be completed online or in person at the field from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 22 and Jan. 29. All parents or guardians must bring the participant’s birth certificate and three proofs of residency or one document supporting school enrollment. Opening Day is set for April 1.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Education Foundation recently announced the Selfless Seniors Class of 2023. One senior from each high school in the district was selected to be honored for their dedication to school and commitment to others. For 15 years, the APS Education Foundation has partnered with photographer Frank Frost to identify and celebrate the Selfless Seniors. Cody Moon, a Volcano Vista High School alum and linebacker for the University of New Mexico, announced this week that he is entering the transfer portal and will leave the UNM program. Moon, a former walk-on, led the  Lobos in tackles in 2022 and was named a second-team All-Mountain West Conference linebacker. Moon entered the UNM program in 2020, redshirted that year and has three years of eligibility remaining. Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina announced plans he has and steps he is taking to address the increase in officer-involved shootings Wednesday in a press release. The Neighborhood Journal has covered several officer-involved shootings this year. In November, APD shared new statistics over a five-year period when it comes to officer-involved shootings. There were 16 total OIS reports in 2022 with nine being fatal. APD reported 10 officer-involved shootings in 2018 and 10 in 2020, eight in 2019 and nine in 2021. Marvin Johnson, a former basketball player at the University of New Mexico, is hosting a Winter Break Basketball Camp next week for hoopers ages 6-15. The four-day camp begins Tuesday at Christine Duncan Academy with a session for kids ages 6-10 at 10 a.m. to noon followed be a session for kids ages 11-15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. The camp is $110 per child and includes a free T-shirt, training and games for basketball players at any skill level.
