The new Bernalillo County Sheriffs Office satellite substation at Coronado Mall will not be there to monitor daily activities, but will instead be used for operations, recruiting and public relations, according to press conference Aug. 25.  Sheriff Manuel Gonzales, Bernalillo County Manager Julie Morgas Baca, and Randy Sanchez, general manager of Coronado Mall, spoke about the collaboration to combat retail crime at Coronado Mall. A shelter-in-place was made Wednesday at Del Norte High School after a student was heard and seen shooting a gun from a motor vehicle. Albuquerque Police arrested 17-year-old Erbielo Cervantes for the incident Wednesday evening. The Del Norte student is being charged with unlawful carry of a deadly weapon on campus, shooting from a motor vehicle and two counts of conspiracy.  No one was hurt during the incident that took place around noon as nearby students reported shots being fired from the the parking lot area near the south lot entrance on Montgomery, where bullet casings were also found.  Albuquerque…

City officials announced their commitment to building a youth homeless center in Albuquerque on Wednesday, serving those ages 18-25. It is estimated 1,200-2,300 young people ages 15-25 are without stable housing in Albuquerque.  This initiative comes from City Councilors Brook Bassan, Tammy Fiebelkorn and Renee Grout, U.S. Rep. Melanie Stansbury and Mayor Tim Keller.  This will be the first of its kind funded and run by the city, and the expected cost is $10 million. The space at the Promenade at 5200 Eubank Blvd. NE, previously the Barley Room, has gotten a full makeover and is due to reopen in December.  The restaurant was going to be called The Point from the High Point Grill and was scheduled to open in April but was postponed. New owners from Dave’s Valley Grill are now taking it over and calling it Dave’s High Desert Bar and Grill.  The space was The Barley Room since 2004 and was known for its karaoke nights. On National Cinema Day, set for Saturday, Sept. 3, patrons can get movie tickets for only $3 per person one day only.  It is suggested to get tickets reserved on Fandango as cinemas across the country expect a major turnout.  The inaugural event, started by the nonprofit Cinema Foundation, hopes to lure film lovers over Labor Day weekend, which is typically a sluggish time for theaters, according to its site.  AMC, Cinemark and Regal national theatre chains are participating in the promotion. Albuquerque Police are now investigating a double homicide on Sunday near Constitution and Lomas NE.  Police responded to a call at 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning at 9223 Marron Circle NE, where officers found the bodies of a man and woman who were both shot.  Officers canvased the area but have not found any suspects yet. It is unclear what led to the shootings. According to ABQRAW, who tallies all recorded homicide investigations from all police organizations to include APD and BCSO, this is the 114th and 115th homicides 2022 in Albuquerque.

On Friday, Mayor Tim Keller vetoed the moratorium placed by the city council to stop the safe outdoor spaces legislation for at least one year. The city-sanctioned homeless camps would help the working homeless that park and sleep in Albuquerque and give them a safe place to go.  Keller said he is exercising his veto authority because the city cannot limit its options for addressing the needs of the city’s most vulnerable residents.  “We need every tool at our disposal to confront the unhoused crisis, and we need to be willing to act courageously,” he said.
