The La Cueva boys and girls varsity soccer teams had a phenomenal 2022 season. Some of the best matchups came against Valley High School for the boys and Albuquerque High School for the girls. An individual was detained for a felony warrant without incident after a SWAT team was called to the Enclave Apartments on Osuna Place between Eubank and Wyoming at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 27. Gilbert Gallegos, director of communications for the Albuquerque Police Department, said in a press release an armed individual was barricaded inside the apartments when SWAT was called. Gallegos said officers were attempting to engage with the individual before providing an update around 11:51 a.m. that the individual had been detained. Cleveland High School’s varsity football team took home the 6A state title after defeating La Cueva 75-61 on Saturday. Both teams were on a nonstop hunt for touchdowns, getting into the end zone any way they could. The Storm held on to an early 21-20 lead after the Bears missed the extra point with 10:32 to go in the second quarter. Cleveland then ran it in for another touchdown, giving them an eight-point lead only to see the Bears score back-to-back TDs right before halftime. The U.S.-England World Cup watch party at Salt Yard East brought the bar to life Friday afternoon. Despite the game ending in a 0-0 tie, there were plenty of exciting moments that had fans on their feet, cheering and yelling for team U.S.A. The Niche 2023 Best Public High School in New Mexico is La Cueva High School. La Cueva earned the 2022 title from Niche as well. Niche is a website that uses multiple data sources to rank schools, including self-reported data, and data from the U.S. Department of Education and the National Center for Education Statistics. Ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, and high school ratings. The Mount Taylor, Magdalena and Kiowa Ranger Districts are still selling firewood permits to New Mexicans in need of wood for their fireplaces. There is a $20 minimum on any plan being purchased at all U.S. Forest Service ranger districts in the state. There are no extensions given on permits and closures of some areas could occur due to fire or weather danger. Native Health Initiative kicks off its 7th Annual Gratitude Run/Walk at North Domingo Baca Park Thanksgiving morning. Hot air balloons will take off from the field while live music is playing from 8-9 a.m. The registration table and packet pick-up closes at 8:45 a.m. and at 8:50 a.m. there will be an opening ceremony. An opening date has yet to be released, but a quick peek at the space next to Now We’re Cooking and across from Tula’s Kitchen reveals a giant Crumbl Cookies “Coming Soon” sign.
