The Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire recently took the infamous honor of becoming the largest wildfire in New Mexico history as fires continue to rage all over the state, including near Socorro, Jemez Springs and Ruidoso. Not only that, a new coronavirus surge is beginning to cause concern around the globe. With all of that in mind, this week we asked Albuquerqueans: Do you have summer travel plans, and if…

Our unhoused neighbors need help now! We agree something must be done. Albuquerque, like many other cities, is seeing a record number of people experiencing homelessness. Unsheltered people are everywhere in town. There are encampments in city parks, alleys, sidewalks and underpasses. If we decamp folks from one spot, they end up at another spot, which is equally troubling. The cycle continues and repeats, obtaining no productive result for anyone. It’s a terrible situation for unsheltered people, a waste of resources for the city and a continual source of frustration for people living and working here. Because there are numerous…

City leaders recently proposed a plan for new “Safe Outdoor Spaces” to help tackle the mounting homelessness problem in Albuquerque. The spaces would involve unused open spaces and parking lots that would be converted to temporary housing. This week, local residents were asked: “What are your thoughts on the proposed ‘Safe Outdoor Spaces’ for the homeless?” Loretta Grunt, a local resident walking her dog Annie at Academy Hills Park, said, “I think it is a good idea. It’s better than having them wandering the streets in your neighborhood. But I think they should maybe do a job at the [Safe Outdoor Space]. Nothing…
