The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, in conjunction with the city’s Parks & Recreation Department, is marking the event’s 50th anniversary with a special giveaway. Couples celebrating their 50th anniversary this year can enter to win a special package of two tickets and parking pass for the Night Magic Glow Oct. 8 at the Balloon Fiesta and be honored on the launch field. The Metro Area Immunization Clinic is set for 3:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, in the main gym of Del Norte High School, 5323 Montgomery Blvd. NE. The clinic is open for any school-aged children in the community and includes all immunizations required for school as well as the COVID-19 vaccine for those ages 3 and up. The Albuquerque City Council is expected to vote on the redistricting map Monday night. There will be a public comment session on the bill. Council will also have to option to once again defer the redistricting vote. The city charter requires that district lines be redrawn every 10 years. A committee is appointed by the council and is composed of an equal number of representatives from each district, one voting member and one alternate. Students in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho will get the chance to view a balloon liftoff close up on Sept. 30. Albuquerque Aloft, the first flying event of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, will bring hot air balloons to the grounds of most public elementary schools in the cities. During the event, students, families and staff have the opportunity to meet pilots and crew while watching how the balloons inflate and fly.  Balloonists at selected schools can elect to fly from the campus or remain inflated at the school site. ABQ Ride has taken another step to ensure the safety its riders. The city announced this week that real-time footage from the entire ABQ Ride fleet will be accessible to the Albuquerque Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center. More than 1,000 cameras across 245 vehicles will be added to the existing camera footage from all 23 ART stations, the Central and Unser Transit Center and the Alvarado Transit Center. The city of Albuquerque is using its BRAIN to fight climate change. This week, city leaders unveiled the Balanced Resource Acquisition and Information Network as its newest resource in fighting climate change. The tool, the first of its kind, will allow the city to identify and address critical issues in regards to energy and water use in real time. Albuquerque firefighters will be working to fill up some boots over the holiday week. The Albuquerque Area Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 244 will be participating the the annual Fill the Boot campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The fundraisers supports MDA’s vision to accelerate research, advance care and advocate for support of MDA families. Coronado Park is officially closed.While the city of Albuquerque stated its intention to close the park last month, no official date was given for the closure.
