Work is scheduled to begin on Las Ventanas Road this week, causing lane closures July 13-15. Crews will close the eastbound lane, east of Rainbow Boulevard, first, then the westbound lane to install at new 16-inch water pipeline across the intersection of Rainbow and Las Ventanas. Scattered among the broken bottles and garbage bags littering the vacant lots on the the corner of Unser and Kimmick lies hastily discarded medical waste, evidence of an alleged DWI-related hit and run that resulted in injuries to two bicyclists the morning of Saturday, July 9. Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller has once again extended the emergency declaration regarding COVID-19. Friday’s declaration was the 34th extension of the original, which was declared in March 2020. It allows for additional emergency procedures and assistance due to the virus. Summer practices kick off this week for Volcano Vista football. With the start of the new season, fundraising also comes along. The Cornivore popcorn fundraiser began Monday and continues through July 22. On Wednesday, the team will be holding the Chipotle dinner fundraiser with the annual barbecue kickoff set for Aug. 6. Yes, there are still a few orange cones and flashing lights, but the residents of Venta Ranch are finally seeing the end of the walkway resurfacing project that has disrupted this normally pedestrian-friendly community. The one-day exhibit of Pictures of Hope will benefit Albuquerque Public Schools students who don’t have a place to call home. The photography exhibit features photographs by 15 APS students as part of the program created by photojournalist Linda Solomon. The program has served teens and children in more than 50 cities. The participating students and their families have received services through the district’s Title I McKinney-Vento Homeless Program. The city of Albuquerque is taking a look at its policies toward the homeless population and encampments.
