La Cueva’s boys varsity soccer team grabbed a 4-1 win against West Mesa during Thursday’s Metro Championships matchup.

La Cueva took an early goal lead when midfielder Malcolm Starr scored the first goal for the Bears, hitting the ball in the back of the net after a well-placed corner kick. West Mesa senior Peter Sanchez managed to put one in with the help of an assist by junior E. De La Cruz, but the Bears’ attack was too much for the Mustangs to handle.

Forward Mason Barone scored the second goal for the Bears and defender Evan Grover put in goal number three, giving La Cueva a 3-1 lead at half. A second half goal put in the back of the net after a Bears’ corner kick sealed the deal for La Cueva, giving them their first win of the season.

Sanchez, who scored the lone goal for the Mustangs, was named West Mesa Player of the Game by MaxPreps. The La Cueva boys and girls varsity soccer teams both take on Volcano Vista next, Saturday, Aug. 27 at the APS Soccer Complex. The girls’ game is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on Field 4, and the boys’ game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Field 2.
