Albuquerque Academy and La Cueva varsity tennis teams are state champs in their respective classes. Both the Chargers and the Bears were seeded No. 1 in the tournament, with Academy taking first place in the 4A tournament and La Cueva first in the 5A tournament.
Bears girls finished the tournament with a 6-0 win over No. 2 Rio Rancho, also taking first in individual singles and doubles matches. The girls finished the season 9-1 overall, with 125 wins and 10 losses.
In an Albuquerque Journal article, Bears coach Amy Heimerl said, “We worked hard to be seeded (No. 1), and it’s just a cherry on the cake pretty much that we were able to put our foot down and finish it off.”
The Bears boys team took home the state title for the seventh time after defeating Piedra Vista 7-1 in the final. La Cueva boys also won individual singles and doubles matches at the state tournament. The boys won 117 out of 138 matches for the season and finished with only one team loss against Albuquerque Academy.
Albuquerque Academy boys finished the season on a 10-game winning streak with a 10-0 overall and 4-0 in district play. They took the 4A state title after defeating St. Michaels 5-0 in the final. The girls Chargers beat Belen 5-0 in the final, also taking home the state title. The girls finished 10-1 overall and 5-0 in their district, only losing once at home to La Cueva.
