Early voting locations for the New Mexico 2022 primaries are open now through June 4 at most locations.

Candidates include those running for state representatives in the House and Senate. The far Northeast Heights includes House Districts 15, 27 and 31 and Senate Districts 21 and 20. Of those races, only one is contested: Elisa Maria Martinez vs. Robert S. Godshall for the Republican spot in District 27. No state Senate seats appear on the list; however, several other seats are on the ballot, including a five-person contest to be the Republican nominee for governor. Voters can register to vote or change their party affiliation at the county clerk’s office and some early voting locations the same day voting takes place.

On April 28, Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver announced changes that allow unaffiliated voters to update their voter registration status and vote in the primaries. “For the first time in #NM history non-major party voters can vote in the upcoming #PrimaryElection using same day voter registration,” Toulouse Oliver posted on Facebook.

Voters not registered with a major political party in New Mexico can change their party affiliation the same day early voting takes place for the 2022 primaries at most Northeast Heights polling locations. According to the Secretary of State’s website, it only takes five minutes to change party affiliation, and voters can reverse those changes immediately after voting in the primaries.

The major political parties in New Mexico are Democrat, Republican or Libertarian. To register or update voter registration at the clerk’s office or early voting location, electors need a valid New Mexico driver’s license or state ID, a document that contains an address in the county together with a photo ID card, or a current valid student photo ID card from a post-secondary educational institution in New Mexico accompanied by a current student fee statement that contains the student’s address in the county.

Absentee ballots can be requested until June 2. Primary elections take place June 7, and the general election is Nov. 8. A sample ballot was not available on the Secretary of State’s voter portal website as of May 24, but the site does provide a list of candidates qualified to run in the 2022 primary elections through the SOS’s candidate portal.
