El Oso Grande, just adjacent to the CNM Montoya campus, has a variety of terrain, transitioning from foothill-like trails — with two gazebos offering views of the Sands at the peak — down to the playground, pollination habitat and park areas.
A bike trail zips through the park center between the Montoya campus and park area, where there is bridge access to and from the campus. The bike trail continues all the way to I-25.
The park also houses a pollination habitat made by the surrounding Oso Grande Neighborhood Association. The park is an ideal area for a pollination habitat and not only helps the local wildlife, but helps the surrounding residents and students learn more about plants native to New Mexico. The park is designed to conserve water usage, so the habitat can thrive throughout the year.
The playground offers mini rock walls, swings and slides.
A variety of trees from pine to crab apple can be found lining the paths.
There are eight doggie bag stations throughout the park, which are well-maintained by volunteers, including Beth Baker, who has kept up the park for the last decade.
She and her dog Libby walk the park daily to replace bags and clean up trash and graffiti along the paths.
The volunteer maintenance residents of the OGNA put into this park shows, as it is impeccably kept with care.
