Eldorado was quick to get ahead and keep the lead against home team Albuquerque High on Friday. The Eagles boys varsity basketball team dominated the passing game and kept the ball moving, making it difficult for the Bulldogs to catch up.
Eagles assistant coach Jimmy Romero said the team played well but could improve defensively. He said too many giveaways and fouls led to three-point conversions for the Bulldogs.
One of the highlights came at the end of the game when Eldorado junior Josiah Mitchell dunked the ball on a breakaway.
“That dunk felt nice. I’ve been waiting for that all game,” Mitchell said. As for his second attempted dunk, he said, “I felt so good about it and then I just had the ball wrong on my forearm.”
Mitchell said there is still room for improvement. “We definitely can play better defense, move the ball out more better. And less turnovers. We had a lot of turnovers that knocked down our shots,” he said.
As for the areas they did well in, Mitchell said, “We played as a team well. We communicated. We helped each other a lot more than we usually do. We didn’t talk bad on each other.”
Eldorado is 6-3 overall this season, losing all three games at home. They play Valley next in a non-district home game Saturday, Dec. 17. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
