Jan Wilson of End of Life Options New Mexico will give a presentation at Cherry Hills Library from 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 18, to discuss the different options for those nearing their end of life.
According to endoflifeoptionsnm.org, the mission of EOLONM is to provide “information and support for all end-of-life options including medical aid in dying.” Some of the options listed on the website include continued treatments, forgoing or ceasing treatment, palliative care, hospice, palliative sedation, voluntarily stopping eating and drinking, and medical aid in dying.
The website says the right to self-determination was established under the New Mexico Uniform Healthcare Decision Act. The act gives a capable adult or an emancipated minor the right to make their own health care decisions. Those decisions include choosing to continue life-sustaining treatments, ceasing unsuccessful treatments or choosing to end their suffering at the end of life.
The EOLONM website says, “End of Life Options NM supports all of these choices and is available to help you understand them so that you can make good decisions given your situation and your options.”
