So far, so good for Volcano Vista athletics one week into the fall.

Senior quarterback Elliot Pasket-Bell led the football team a 34-17 victory over Las Cruces Friday night at Community Stadium.

Pasket-Bell threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 97 yards and a score to help the Hawks get the season off to a good start. Junior running back Alijah Gonzales rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns and senior wide receiver Tristan Cordova caught six passes for 105 yards and a score.

Volcano Vista’s girls soccer team also began its season Friday with a big win. The Lady Hawks beat La Cueva 5-1 behind stellar performances from underclassmen.

Junior Kayla Salazar and sophomore Emma Lucero each scored two goals. Eighth-grader Kayla Sandoval also scored for VVHS, taking advantage of a new APS Athletics rule that allows eighth-graders to play varsity beginning this school year.

The girls soccer team opened the Metro Tournament with a late game Monday against Valley and play Atrisco Heritage at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Volcano Vista’s boys soccer team begins the season at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Metro Tournament at the APS Soccer Complex.

Volleyball season begins on Tuesday, Aug. 30, when Volcano Vista hosts Sandia.

Schedules have not yet been released for Volcano Vista’s cross-country teams.
