Now that the Balloon Fiesta is over, the skies are clear, and temperatures expected to be in the upper-70s Friday and Saturday with a possibility of showers and colder temperatures on Sunday. The warm, sunny weather is perfect for a day hike or a pickup game at the park. On Sunday, a trip to the library or a workout at the North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center gym may be more suitable. Here’s a glimpse at some other activities going on in and around the far Northeast Heights:
1. Friday, Oct. 14, is game night at the NDB Multigenerational Center. Join the mummy relay races in the half-court gym from 6-8 p.m. or give Bingo a try in room 1 from 1-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day at the center. 2. Cheer on La Cueva’s varsity volleyball team as it takes on Farmington at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in a district home game. The Lady Bears are 16-0 this season with seven more district games to go, according to MaxPreps. Farmington is currently 8-8 this season.
3. Jam to some country western with Joe Mark Angelo & The Hard Livin’ Band Friday, Oct. 14, and Saturday, Oct. 15, at Sandia Resort & Casino’s Tlur Pa Lounge. Live music is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on both days. Visit sandiacasino.com/event/joe-mark-angelo-6 for more details.
4. Join the Sunday Fun Day Hike at Tunnel Canyon with the Albuquerque Hiking and Outdoor Meetup Group. Departure time is 7:45 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. Participants should be able to hike 9 miles in less than four hours. Water, snacks and sun protection are required and trekking poles optional. 5. Head to the Cherry Hills Library Sunday, Oct. 16, to grab a book or join the Sunday Sci-Fi Book Group. The group will be discussing “Voyage to Kazohinia” by Sandor Szathmari from 2:30-4 p.m. in the library’s Children’s Room. All are welcome to attend.
Citywide events
6. Join the Walk to Cure Arthritis Saturday morning at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation, the goal is to support research for better treatments and a cure as well as offering tools and resources to help reduce chronic pain and improve peoples lives. It is the inaugural event for the walk, and 10-year-old Jocelyn Proa, who has battled juvenile inflammatory arthritis, will be honored. Residents can walk, raise funds or volunteer to support the event, which begins at 8:30 a.m.; the walk itself starts at 9:30 a.m. For more information or to register or donate, click here.
7. ABQ CiQlovía is hosting a block party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday along Kathryn from Louisiana to San Pedro. The event is a celebration of streets that are closed to cars and open to people on foot and bike, allowing for outdoor exercise classes, shopping, live music and other activities. 8. A community art show scheduled for Friday features the work of artistes with lived experiences of homelessness. Works include paintings, drawings, poetry, jewelry and more. It runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Civic Plaza and runs concurrently with Food Truck Friday, allowing visitors to enjoy lunch and entertainment on the plaza.
9. The aquarium at ABQ BioPark is hosting On the Rocks: Rio to the Sea from 6:30-9 p.m. Friday. This 21-plus event explores the coral reefs, the lives of sea turtles, and the inner workings of fish with a fish dissection. A BioPark aquarist will be on hand to answer questions, and there will also be games, a selfie station, tropical drinks and snacks.
