There was no state championship for the Volcano Vista High School cross-country teams this year, but both teams made the podium Saturday at Albuquerque Academy.
The boys team finished second and the girls were third at the State Cross Country Meet. Both teams won the state crown in 2021.
“They performed excellent; we had a great season,” Volcano Vista coach Elena Schrader said. “Last year, taking both trophies home was phenomenal, but anytime you walk away with both teams on podium, you can’t be upset.”

Thomas Croshow finished second, the best finisher for the Hawks, with a time of 15:08.24 in the 5K race. He finished less than four seconds behind Sandia’s Steven West.
“He didn’t get the chance to race against Steven much this year due to Steven being out with illnesses and some injuries,” Schrader said. “But we told him go after him, give it a shot and we got within three seconds.”
The boys finished with 48 points just behind Rio Rancho’s 44. The girls team had 91 points, trailing Rio Rancho (85) and Cleveland (60).“That team was really young,” Schrader said. “We had a lot of freshmen, including an eighth grader for the first time, so I think they got some nerves out of them after today and we’re ready to do big things in the years coming up.”
Carysa Marquez was the top finisher for the girls, earning a sixth-place medal with a time of 19:09.75.
