La Cueva High School athlete Mason Posa was recently featured on a ProView Sports YouTube show titled “Local Focus with Sebastian Noel.” The 2025 graduate talks about his freshman year as a varsity football and state championship wrestler at La Cueva while on the show.
“Our defensive coordinator saw that I had the potential of starting, and then I just got to the varsity level,” Posa said as he explained how he was able to make the varsity football team as a freshman.
When asked what the highlight of his freshman year was, Posa said the game against Volcano Vista. “That was the point where I started all my games like, that’s where the coaches knew that I was a varsity player and I could perform with all these seniors and juniors,” Posa said. “I had two picks that game, and I think nine tackles, so it was probably one of the best games I ever played.”
The 6-foot, 2-inches tall linebacker said a typical day begins by waking up at 4:30 a.m., then he lifts weights before going to “zero hour” practice, where he either lifts weights again or practices on the field. “And then after that I got all my schooling and then after school I either do more workouts or I wrestle,” Posa said. The young athlete said he’s been wrestling for eight years, adding that, “I think wrestling has made me a phenomenon football player.”
When asked what the 2022-23 season will look like, Posa said, “We’re all thinking a state title. Our offense, we’re looking amazing there and our defense, we can be strong; we just need to build up to that point … We’re just hungry for a state title this year.”
According to MaxPreps statistics, Posa had 42 solo tackles and 50 total tackles, with an average of 4.5 tackles per game during his freshman year. He also had two sacks and one interception during the 2021-22 season.
