La Cueva’s boys varsity team finished its regular season first in 5A District 2 after defeating Eldorado 2-1 Thursday, Oct. 20. Junior Brandon Boling and senior Mason Barone had the two goals for the Bears and an assist apiece. MaxPreps stats shows that goalkeeper Mateo Nobrega made seven saves during Thursday’s game, letting in one goal from Eldorado’s Bodie Larson. The Bears are ranked No. 348 nationally, No. 3 in New Mexico and No. 3 in NM Class 5A. The boys take on the winner of the Santa Fe/Rio Rancho matchup in their first game of the 2022 Fuddruckers Boys State Championships. That game is scheduled for Oct. 28 or 29. They earned a bye in the first round, automatically placing them in the quarterfinals.

The girls’ varsity team finished its regular season 14-6 overall after losing 1-0 to Eldorado on Thursday. Senior Katlynn McKim scored the lone goal for the Golden Eagles. La Cueva finished third in 5A District 2, behind Sandia and first-place Eldorado. MaxPreps ranks the Lady Bears No. 218 nationally, No. 7 in the state and No. 6 in NM Class 5A. The girls take on Clovis Tuesday, Oct. 25, in their first game of the 2022 Fuddruckers Girls Soccer State Championships.

Football

The Bears’ varsity team has one game left in the regular season after defeating Sandia 55-20 on Friday, Oct. 21. They play Farmington in a district home game Friday, Oct. 28. La Cueva is 8-1 overall and 3-0 in 6A District 2/5. MaxPreps ranks the Bears No. 3 in the state behind Centennial and Cleveland. They are ranked No. 3 in NM Division 6A and No. 2 in Albuquerque. The Class 6A 2022 Football State Championship is scheduled for Oct. 29 through Nov. 26.

Volleyball

The undefeated reigning state champs defeated West Mesa 3-0 Saturday, Oct. 22, bringing their record to 19-0 overall and 6-0 in 5A District 2. They play Piedra Vista next in a district home game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. La Cueva is ranked No. 1 in New Mexico and No. 1 in NM Division 5A. The 2022 Volleyball State Championship will be Nov. 10-12.

Cross-country

La Cueva’s Spencer Gilbertson placed second for the boys varsity team in the 5,000 meter race during the Oct. 21 Eldorado Invite. He finished with a time of 19:00.21, behind Nick Moore of Eldorado, who had a time of 18:10.55, according to MileSplit NM. Bears’ runner James Stuart came in fourth with a time of 19:19.18. Spencer Jenkins placed 10th and Aiden Lujan 11th in the race. The boys varsity team placed second overall, behind first-place Eldorado, with an average team time of 19:56.37.

Arianna Thiel-Hadjilambrinos took third for the girls varsity team in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 22:18.22. Kendall Downing placed tenth with a time of 24:16.65. The girls varsity team placed second overall with an average team time of 24:31.47. Eldorado took first for the girls varsity, with an average team time of 23:43.75.
