The La Cueva High School volleyball team finished off an unbeaten season by winning its second straight state championship Saturday night at Rio Rancho Events Center.
Top-seeded La Cueva had no trouble with No. 2 Las Cruces, winning in four sets 25-20, 18-25, 25-17 and 25-19.
The Bears ended the season with a 27-0 record and only dropped 10 sets all year, including two in their four state tournament matches. La Cueva has now won four of the last five state titles and five since 2015.
“It’s great; I think this was a special one,” La Cueva head coach Steve Archibeque said. “Having that 27-0, no other team has done 27-0. I have a special group of kids and they worked hard all season. This one is just as special as the others.”
La Cueva beat Cleveland 3-0 last season to win the state championship and went 26-1. The Bears, who have won 47 straight games, last lost to Cibola on Sept. 11, 2021.
