La Cueva’s girls varsity soccer team will take on Rio Rancho Friday, Sept. 2, for third place in the Metro Championships soccer tournament gold bracket. The Lady Bears were defeated by Cleveland 5-3 on Wednesday, foiling their chances of competing for first place in the tournament.

Senior Olivia Haddock, who was named MaxPreps La Cueva player of the game, scored two goals, and sophomore Makala Chavez scored one. La Cueva junior Elena Evans is credited for one assist by MaxPreps.

Cleveland had three yellow cards and were called for 15 fouls during Wednesday’s matchup. The Lady Bears were called for three fouls. Junior goalkeeper Aubrey Salazar made four saves for the Bears while Cleveland’s keeper Brooke Keene is credited with five saves by MaxPreps.

Haddock is La Cueva’s lead goal scorer so far with a total of seven goals in early season play. On receiving player of the game for Thursday’s performance, the girls soccer coaching staff said, “Olivia controlled the middle of the field. She had two beautiful free kicks for goals. She dominated the second half in the midfield.”

Friday’s matchup against Rio Rancho will be at 7 p.m. on Field 1 of the APS Soccer Complex. They play St. Pius X in a non-district away game on Thursday, Sept. 8. To see the Lady Bear’s full schedule, visit maxpreps.com/nm/albuquerque/la-cueva-bears/soccer/girls/schedule.
