A La Cueva High School student was arrested Friday as school ended after physically assaulting Principal Dana Lee, according to an email sent from the school to parents that was obtained by the Neighborhood Journal.
According to Troy Hughes, the associate superintendent of learning for Zone 4, Lee overheard chatter of a student fight and tried to intervene. One student threw a knife into a trash can, then hit Lee when she tried to retrieve the weapon.
Lee did not suffer any serious injuries, and no threats were made against the school, students or staff.
“Those of you who know Principal Lee know she always puts her students first and is courageous and steadfast,” Hughes wrote in the email. “Still, she is shaken from today’s attack.”
The email said the student was arrested and police retrieved the knife.
“We appreciate the quick actions of our APS police officers and want to assure the community that this is an unusual occurrence on our campus,” Hughes wrote.
