La Cueva High School is seeded number one in the Class 5-A boys and girls 2022 New Mexico Activities Association State Tennis Championships team competition, set for May 6-7.
For the boys team competition, the Bears will take on either Eldorado or Cibola Friday, May 6. Singles team competition begins at 2 p.m. and doubles at 3:30 p.m. at the Jerry Cline Tennis Complex.
In the state girls singles competition, La Cueva’s “Queen of Tennis” Cameron King will take on the winner of Centennial’s Erin Lee or Capital High’s Marianna Carillo at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 4. King, a sophomore, is undefeated this season, winning all 16 matches in singles play. La Cueva’s Stephanie Romero and Victoria Outkin will also compete in the state singles prelims May 4 at Jerry Cline.
For the boys singles competition, La Cueva’s Thaaj Bhardwaj will take on Thomas Icken of Rio Rancho at 4:30 p.m. May 4 at Jerry Cline. Also on May 4, No. 2 seed Tanin Ramnath of La Cueva will take on the winner of the matchup between Diego Gadret of Santa Fe and Joshua C. De Baca of Organ Mountain. Ramnath’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 4 at Jerry Cline.
In the 5A girls doubles tournament, La Cueva’s Ella Lundahl and Cameron King take on Rio Rancho’s Kennedy Baugh and Presley Saxon at 3 p.m. May 4. La Cueva’s No. 2 seed Janie Xiong and Yana Outkin take on the winner of the match between Hobbs’ Jessica Sturgill and Lynlee Armstrong and Capital High’s Glory Fowler and Alyssa Sandoval.
On the boys side, No. 1 seed Alex Lumanog and Calvin Van Dyke of La Cueva take on the winner between Cleveland’s Elliot Brann and Tyler Nunn or Roswell’s Joacin Luna and Sean Brackeen. Van Dyke and Lumanog are scheduled to play at 6 p.m. May 4.
