La Cueva High School’s athletic director Brandon Back is quoted by the New Mexico Athletics Association as saying varsity football player Aidan Armenta has been “the top quarterback (in the state) for a couple years now.”

According to the NMAA article, Back also said, “He’s very dependable. His teammates know that if they need something, whether it’s throwing routes or coming in and helping clean up, he’s going to be here and I think that’s what makes him one of the best kids we’ve had here in a while.”

According to qbhitlist.com, Armenta is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighs 190 pounds and had a 3.71 GPA last year. The site gives him a top ranking by class and style of 141 and a score of 91.84. The site says he played 12 games, made 255 completions, 28 passing touchdowns, 132 rushing yards, 2,696 passing yards and five rushing touchdowns in the 2021-22 season.

“His vertical game is virtually unstoppable with tight trajectory and distance. This stretches the defense, which lets Aidan take advantage of gaps within zone coverage. His intermediate throws are made with a strong release and high velocity,” QB Hit List’s scouting report reads.

In addition, the report says, “Aidan own the pocket, he’s in full control when on the field. He controls the flow of the game. He shows good awareness of the defensive pressure, able to work around it. Does a great job going through his progression, from his primary targets on down to his secondary outlets. A very intelligent QB who has a very good understanding of the game.”

Armenta was named 2021 offensive player of the year in district 2-6A and 2021 first team all-district 2-6A. He also played varsity baseball for La Cueva and, according to a June 10 Twitter post, received a D1 offer from the University of New Mexico.

The Class of 2023 quarterback is quoted on QB Hit List as saying, “As the quarterback, I feel responsible to be the best role model I can be. I believe actions speak louder than words and therefore I must walk the talk. I also play baseball and am a senator at my school so I stay very involved and contribute to our school’s spirt. I look forward to my future and am committed to maximizing my potential and being the best I can be.”

La Cueva’s first game of the season is against Rio Rancho at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. The matchup is a non-conference away game. The most recent varsity football schedule can be found at lacuevahsfootball.com/varsity-schedule.shtml.
