Why ECO 88 gas may not be good for your car

Unleaded ECO 88 is an environmentally friendly, lower-cost fuel that burns cleaner than regular unleaded gasoline. It’s a blend of 15% ethanol and 85% gasoline and has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in all 2001 and newer cars, trucks and SUVs.

It seems that the ECO 88, a.k.a E15, gas option may be a few cents cheaper at the pump. Although gas companies say there is no difference on your car, the miles per gallon rating isn’t always great with experts saying a vehicle can run through the higher ethanol blend more quickly than regular gas. When vehicles are older, it can also affect wear and tear more on a vehicle, leading to long-term engine damage. That includes a higher likelihood leaky fluids due to the blend corroding plastic and rubber components.

Engines not equipped with newer equipment to handle ECO gas could potentially overheat as well. It is not recommended for vehicles that sit with a tank for more than a few weeks, as it dissipates much quicker than regular unleaded. So, it may be cheaper to get ECO 88 at the pump and better for the environment, but it may be detrimental to the health of your vehicle, costing you more in the long run.
