This statewide sports competition started in 1989, and today more than 4,500 athletes participate in 20 Olympic-style games from May to November. Winners are then invited to compete in the Biannual State Games of America.
All New Mexicans are eligible to compete, and there are events for all ages with individual divisions for kids, adults and seniors in most categories.
Many games have already taken place, but there are many more to register for in the coming months, starting with pickle ball from Aug. 19-21, with a $50 registration per athlete, which includes an event T-shirt. Check-ins start 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug 19, at the Manzano Mesa Multi-Generational Center on 501 Elizabeth St. SE.
Next up is the bowling competition starting Sept. 1 with mid and state finals going to Nov. 30. Registration deadline is Sept. 1, and all games will be at Ten Pins Alley in Rio Rancho at 1416 Deborah Road SE.
Disc golf competitions will commence Sept. 24-25 with the site to be determined. Registration deadline is Sept. 17 with a $50 registration fee.
After that, archery is Oct. 29 at the Archery Shoppe at 2910 Carlisle Blvd. NE. Registrations will be taken until the day of the event, and shooting sessions are set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost is $30 to compete and check-ins are 8 a.m. and noon.
