Beginning on July 16, dialing 988 will connect people to the national suicide prevention lifeline.

New Mexico’s Statewide Crisis and Access Line will be the hub for the expanded network, with text and chat options available for people in crisis.

The three-digit dialing, along with a focus on more proactive and coordinated care, is expected to help reach significantly more people in need of mental and behavioral health support.

NMCAL will be adding 26 positions to its call-taking staff. Opportunities include full-time bachelor’s-level crisis and access specialists at a base of $22- $24 per hour (plus shift differential); master’s-level clinical specialists, starting at $26-$30 per hour (plus shift differentials); and certified peer support specialists, starting at $17 per hour. Positions can be fully remote or work out of the Albuquerque call center. Scheduling options for most positions are varied and flexible across all hours and days, and offer excellent benefits and training.

“While the technology will be important, at its core, this is still a people-first initiative,” said Wendy Linebrink-Alison, NMCAL’s program manager, in a release. “Having enough trained staff to meet the current and expected demand of the new system will be at the heart of its success.”
