The second annual One Albuquerque Cleanup Month hopes to follow up on last year’s success with its April cleanup days.
The city of Albuquerque’s Solid Waste Department website says 94,860 pounds, or more than 47 tons, of trash were collected during last year’s inaugural One Albuquerque Cleanup Month. The site says 732 volunteers participated in the 2021 event.
Each quadrant of the city is assigned its own cleanup day with hours of 8 a.m. to noon, but volunteers can help on any of the four Saturdays in any location. The southeast quadrant is assigned the first Saturday, April 9. The northeast quadrant is scheduled for the following Saturday, April 16; the southwest quadrant for April 23; and the northwest quadrant for April 30.
The citywide initiative coincides with Earth Month and the globally recognized April 22 Earth Day. According to earthday.org, more than 190 countries are engaged in Earth Day and 1 billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, which began in 1970.
Neighborhood associations and teams from the northeast quadrant are encouraged to register on the city’s website no later than April 13. Volunteers will be given garbage bags, gloves and maps of nearby parks and trails near the quadrant’s trash drop-off location, North Domingo Baca Park, 7521 Carmel Ave. NE.
