The response to a car accident resulted in an officer-involved shooting early Saturday morning.
Albuquerque police from the Foothills Command responded to a single-vehicle accident in the median Tramway Blvd. and Rover, just south of Menaul, at 2:20 a.m. Saturday. Police Chief Harold Medina said in a statement on social media that they believe the individuals in the vehicle had “driven down to the middle of the roadway and were involved in an accident.”
He explained one of the passengers seemed to be passed out. When they tried to remove the passenger and driver, the officer indicated the possibility of a gun on the scene. During the course of the investigation, one officer discharge his firearm, and the drive of the vehicle died at the scene, according to a release from the police department. A gun was also recovered from inside the vehicle.
The suspect died at the scene, and APD will be continuing to investigate what happened.
No further information has been released, including how many shots were fired from either the suspect or police.
The Multi-Agency Task Force and APD will continue to investigate the incident further, including interviewing witnesses and completing forensic tests. It will then be forwarded to the Superintendent of Police Reform and the District Attorney’s office for further review, including the determination of any criminal charges.
