There was an unexpected twist of events Friday morning as about one-third of Eagle Ridge Middle School students were honored for their academic success. So many parents and supporters showed up the honor roll recognition ceremony had to be moved from the cafeteria to the gym.
Even then, it was had for some to find a seat.
“That’s a good problem to have,” said Principal Catherine Rodriguez, noting that it’s never happened before. “I love our turnout today. That was a phenomenal showing of our parents and community to support our students.”
She said Friday’s ceremony was a great opportunity for the community to come together and show support for the kids. “We’re all coming off a really hard time, and to put academics first is so good to see.”
In total, 282 students were recognized for having at least a 3.33 GPA for the fall 2022 semester.
As the ceremony progressed, the number of students recognized dropped as the grade levels got higher. Trenna Gilbert, assistant principal, noted to the sixth grade 4.0 students that if they maintain that track all through middle school, they would be honored with a Soaring Eagle Award.
After the eighth grade 4.0 students were recognized, she said, “I hope this is indicative of how they do in high school.” Rodriguez added that if they were all on track for a Soaring Eagle and maintained it through the current semester, the school might need to get a new plaque to fit all their names.
