Brittany Poss, director of data and analytics at Research & Polling Inc., is scheduled to give a presentation discussing methods used to present redistricting concepts to the Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education during an Oct. 13 APS Redistricting Committee meeting.
This is the fourth of five scheduled redistricting meetings where committee members discuss how school board boundaries may change. Redistricting is required by law every 10 years to coincide with the results of U.S. Census data. Redistricting is done to ensure political districts, such as school boards, have as close as possible an equal population in each district. School board redistricting does not affect school zone boundaries.
When deciding how school board district boundaries may change, the APS Board of Education takes into consideration district populations, minority voting rights, compactness, contiguity and communities of interest. Boundary changes will go into effect in 2023.
Research & Polling Inc. will present APS ranking options, concept maps and concept tables of voting age populations by district and race. The tables and maps are available for the public to view via the Oct. 13 meeting agenda. The meeting takes place at 5:30 p.m. inside the John Milne Community Board Room, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE. The meeting is open to the public and can also be attended virtually.

The next redistricting committee meeting is Oct. 25, when members will vote on a redistricting concept map to be recommended to the APS Board of Education. A final vote will take place in December, when the board is scheduled to approve the final redistricting map and boundaries.
