The proposed $727,000 roundabout to be built at the intersection of Holly Avenue and Ventura Street is still in the planning phase, but as the new Allaso Vineyard Luxury Apartments come closer to completion, the need to mitigate traffic congestion in the area has increased.
Scott Cilke, spokesperson for Municipal Development, said the developer is taking the lead on the roundabout project. “Last I heard, that was moving forward, but our crew isn’t conducting that project,” Cilke said. “My understanding is that the developer will be coordinating that installation, which means from a city perspective, at this point, planning would have more info.”
City council approved amending the capital implementation program to include the roundabout in March 2021. According to the text of the resolution (R-21-137), the project will be paid for through impact fees and will “provide capacity and traffic safety improvements.”
District 4 City Councilor Brook Bassan proposed installing the roundabout because of growth in the area, but at least one area resident complained the project is not moving along quickly enough.
“The intersection of Holly and Ventura is extremely congested,” Marty McGowan said earlier this year. “I don’t understand why the road wasn’t widened before the construction started.”
Lane closures on San Pedro from Carmel to Alameda
Lane closures at various locations on San Pedro Drive between Carmel Avenue and Alameda Boulevard will begin Thursday, Nov. 10, for subsurface utility engineering. Two-way traffic will be maintained by a flagging operation with lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The project is scheduled to be complete by Friday, Dec. 2.

A meeting took place earlier this month to discuss further plans to improve the San Pedro corridor to help reduce crash rates, improve pavement, lighting and drainage deficiencies, and improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. The company HDR hosted that meeting.
Other roadwork in far northeast ABQ
Lane closures will continue along Alameda Boulevard from Balloon Museum Drive to San Mateo Boulevard until Wednesday, Nov. 30. The eastbound right lane and sidewalk will be closed on Alameda between Jefferson and San Mateo for median landscaping, irrigation and concrete paving. On Monday, the westbound lane on Carmel Avenue was closed at Barstow Street. “In terms of Carmel & Barstow – looks like we are working to perform some crack sealing in the area, particularly on Carmel/Holly,” Cilke said.
