Four Class of 2022 La Cueva High School students are National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners, and two are College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship winners. The Albuquerque Public Schools website announced those winners, along with four other winners from APS, on June 1.

La Cueva’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners are:
• Milidu N. Jayaweera
• Andrew Kim
Mario F. Sumali
• Melody F. Yeh

The National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners were announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation on May 11. According to a NMSC press release, 2,500 winners were selected from more than 15,000 finalists. Winners from each state “have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.” The scholarship may be used at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university.

La Cueva’s College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are:
• Elan Z. Landau
• Benjamin A. Willhite

On June 1, NMSC announced more than 2,600 College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship winners. The scholarships are financed by U.S. colleges and universities and include between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Corporate-sponsored awards were announced April 27, and additional recipients of the college-sponsored awards will be announced July 11. In total, about 7,500 scholars will be awarded 2022 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $28 million.
