The New Mexico High School Coaches Association announced its 2022 Award Winning Coaches Wednesday.
Three Volcano Vista coaches were named Coach of the Year in their respective sports by the NMHSCA.
Elena Schrader was named the girls cross country coach of the year after leading the Hawks to a state championship in November.
“It is an absolute honor,” Schrader said. “I want to give credit to my amazing assistant coaches and athletes. To the 2021 season athletes, thank you for your hard work, commitment, and belief in the program. To all the athletes of seasons past, thank you for being the foundation for the successes of this team. It is all of their hard work that has lead to this award. Coach Crawley and Coach Landes make a wonderful support system. I am grateful to be the coach of such an amazing group of young men and and women.”
Ahren Griego was selected as the girls wrestling coach of the year, helping Volcano Vista to a fourth-place finish at the state tournament in February.
Ross Villareal, who helped lead the Hawks to an undefeated, state championship-winning season was picked as the girls basketball assistant coach of the year.
The Volcano Vista coaches, along with the rest of the award winners, will be recognized at the Bobby Gibbs Awards Show from 7-9 p.m. Monday, July 25, at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque, NM Ballroom.
