It was a tough weekend for the Volcano Vista High School baseball and softball teams, as both squads saw early exits from the Class 5A state tournaments.

The baseball team led 2-0 after the first inning Friday and took a 3-2 lead on Xavier Lucero’s single that scored Liam Ritchie in the top of the fifth inning. But the Rams answered with a six-run bottom half of the inning to take control and cruise to an 8-4 victory.

It was more of the same Saturday as the Rams ended No. 10 Volcano Vista’s season with an 8-1 triumph in the second game of the best-of-three series. Volcano Vista finishes the season with a 14-12 record. The Hawks went 0-5 against Rio Rancho this season.

The 10th-seeded softball team also saw its season end on a disappointing note, losing 7-3 at Hobbs Friday night in the play-in round of the state tournament. Volcano Vista finished with a 15-9 record.
