Volcano Vista High School’s football team saw its undefeated start to the season come to an end Friday night with a 38-28 defeat at the hands of La Cueva.

After an early La Cueva touchdown, the Hawks answered with two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Elliot Paskett-Bell to take a 13-7 lead in the second quarter. La Cueva followed with 24 straight points, aided by three onside kick recoveries to take a 31-13 lead into halftime.

Alijah Gonzales had a 7-yard touchdown run and ran for the two-point conversion to make it 31-21 late in the third quarter, but La Cueva answered with another TD.

Paskett-Bell threw a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to again cut the deficit to 10 but also threw an interception with less than two minutes in the game to seal the Bears’ win.

The Hawks (3-1) play Sandia at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 at Wilson Stadium next.
