It’s been an exciting year at the Neighborhood Journal, from the website going live in March to winning first place in the Best Website category from the New Mexico Press Association.

March
The girls and boys basketball teams began the chase for history.
The school helped raise money for the Papa Brown Scholarship Fund.
The VVHS robotics team won a league championship.
VVHS senior Natalia Chavez returned to the scene of her historic buzzer beater that won a state championship in 2021.
The girls and boys hoops teams made history by going undefeated and winning state.
J’Kwon Hill was named Boys Basketball Gatorade Player of the Year in New Mexico.
Dayna Herrera pitched a perfect game for the softball team.
Students showed off their work at the Metro Youth Art Exhibit.
Seven basketball players earned All-State honors.
April
The Hawks won six events at the APS Track & Field Invitational.
Krystal Campos was named Volcano Vista’s Selfless Senior.
Both basketball teams were honored at the State Capitol for their championship seasons.
Student body president and runner Angela Korte signed with New Mexico State.
The Hawks flexed their muscles at the State Powerlifting Championship.
New Mexico United superfan Sombrero Man is the voice of Volcano Vista athletics.
The Hawks had a strong showing at all-star track & field meet.
16 athletes signed their Letter of Intent.
The first winners of the Papa Brown Scholarship were announced.
Volcano Vista was accepted into the state film festival.
Cross country and track & field coach Elena Schrader was honored by the Isotopes before a game.
May
VVHS again had a sparkling graduation rate.
The baseball and softball teams were ousted from the state tournament.
The boys were fifth and the girls finished seventh at state golf tourney.
VVHS hired a former Lobo to be new volleyball coach.
Hundreds of Hawks celebrated graduation.
Angela Korte had quite a day as she got her diploma and won a state championship in track & field.
Volcano Vista won several individual hoops awards.
A gun was confiscated from a student’s backpack in the school parking lot.
June
It was announced that the student who was found with a gun on campus was not to be arrested.
Star basketball player Jaelyn Bates was named National Native American Player of the Year.
Three coaches were awarded by the NMHSCA.
July
Noah Massey raised funds to play for Team USA Baseball.
Football practice kicked off for the Hawks.
August
A memorial was erected to honor the first responders who died in a helicopter crash.
Customized parking spots at the school were vandalized.
We put a spotlight on senior Carter Larsen.
Fall sports teams got off to a fast start.
September
The Hawks football team tasted defeat for the first time.
The band had a quality showing at regional competition.
Quarterback Elliot Paskett-Bell was named APS Student of the Week.
Volcano Vista senior Elliot Paskett-Bell was named Student of the Week.
Natalia Chavez signed an NIL deal with Breaking Limits.
October
Volcano Vista football got a big win over Cibola.
VVHS won 3A Pageant of the Bands.
The girls soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the state tournament.
November
The boys were second and the girls finished third at the state cross country meet.
It was a busy Election Day at the vote center at VVHS
Volcano Vista was rated as the sixth best high school in APS.
The boys and girls hoops teams began the quest for another state crown.
Five Hawks were named to All-Star football teams.
December
Sophomores and juniors received their PSAT/NMSQT scores.
The girls basketball team saw its 46-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of La Cueva.
10 football players were named to an All-Metro team.
The girls hoops team got some revenge on La Cueva.
